Innovation and Support
Operation Food Search works beyond immediate food assistance to address the root causes of hunger. One innovative approach is to demonstrate that food is medicine. OFS works with participants throughout the St. Louis region through the Fresh Rx: Nourishing Healthy Starts and Fresh Rx: Prescribing Healthy Futures programs. The Fresh Rx programs are designed to connect families who are experiencing food insecurity with fresh, local food and resources for a healthy household. Better nutrition helps manage chronic health conditions and prevents adverse health outcomes.
Expectant Mothers and Their Families
The Fresh Rx: Nourishing Healthy Starts program provides support to pregnant women experiencing food insecurity throughout the perinatal period to improve birth and health outcomes. Food insecurity during pregnancy has significant long-term health impacts on moms and babies. Mothers have greater risk of chronic conditions and complications during pregnancy, and infants are more likely to be born early and underweight. OFS provides expectant mothers and their families with quality nutrition and wraparound supportive services.
